Headquartered in the Pureland Industrial Complex in Gloucester County, New Jersey, SMS Rail Service, Inc., a Class III, common carrier railroad, provides a full spectrum of rail-related services to various locations throughout New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York. SMS is a family-owned company dedicated to delivering customized logistics solutions to its world-wide customer base. Since its founding in December of 1993, SMS has maintained its pragmatic, grass roots approach to doing business, while continuing to employ innovative thought processes and work systems designed to maximize safety, efficiency and flexibility in meeting or exceeding a client’s desired outcome.

SMS Rail Service, Inc. began operations in the Pureland Industrial Complex moving approximately 700 cars per year over 4 miles of track. It now manages approximately 14,000 carloads per year in 3 states over about 69 miles of track. While some of that growth is attributable to the acquisition of additional, free-standing operations, the most impressive growth has been at our operation in the Pureland Industrial Park. There, in addition to general growth in our customer base that required the installation of about 10 miles of additional trackage throughout the park, SMS was instrumental in bringing into the Park new industry, which resulted in a 1.5-mile extension to the southern end of the railroad in order to deliver the required raw materials by rail.

Over the past 29 years, SMS has proven itself to be a first-class provider of 24/7/365, on-demand railcar switching and related services. SMS Rail’s Logistics Division is proud to offer that same quality of service to its growing customer base, both domestically and internationally. Commodities of all kinds – aggregates, dry bulk commodities, lumber and other building materials, hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals, fuels and compressed gasses, all the way to food-grade commodities – are transloaded from transport container to transport container by SMS’ Logistics Division.

SMS Rail restores, maintains and operates many historic Baldwin diesel locomotives. It’s a labor of love to keep these rare and historic units in-service for future generations to witness. See them in action at our locations or just search “SMS Baldwin” on YouTube. Additionally, SMS recently founded the Woodstown Central Railroad, tourist excursion operations on the Salem Branch. This endeavor has added a host of historic passenger equipment to our roster, which is being systematically and painstakingly restored in our own car shop.
